Trump and DeSantis Converge in Iowa, Showing Who’s More Popular
[shouting] “I love you, Donald Trump!” So, today at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, we saw the two leaders for the Republican presidential nomination come together: Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. It’s rare that they share the same geographic area, much less, you know, confined setting like – like the fairgrounds. They got markedly different receptions. President Trump was – was mobbed like a rock star. [shouting] “Love you, Trump!” Gov. DeSantis had enthusiastic crowds. “Thank you.” But the size difference was very noticeable. So there were two pretty noticeable incidents involving planes today. The first one was just as Gov. DeSantis was about to start his interview with [Gov.] Kim Reynolds of Iowa. A plane started circling overhead, trailing a banner that said: “Be likable, Ron!” Now, we don’t know who paid for that, but it was clearly someone trying to unsettle and mock the governor for his perceived awkwardness. The second incident happened when DeSantis was at the Pork Producers tent. And President Trump’s jet took an unusual route to the airport and flew right over the fairgrounds, which caused the crowd to start shouting, “Trump, Trump, Trump. We love Trump.” Gov. DeSantis has just started on what he calls a reset of his campaign. And as part of that reset, he’s promised to hit all 99 counties in Iowa. No Republican has run against someone who’s basically an incumbent, like former President Trump, who can draw thousands of people to see him give a short talk or tour through cows and – and horses. It’s just a dynamic we – we haven’t seen before that DeSantis is up against.
