Even though it is illegal to post fake reviews online, there is a big industry that helps companies do just that. Businesses that want to appear more credible can purchase fake reviews — or write their own — lifting their rating and enticing customers with phony endorsements.
While websites that host reviews, like Google Maps and Amazon, say they remove millions of offending posts, experts say the problem has proved stubbornly persistent.
The Federal Trade Commission is exploring new rules that could address the fake review business. The New York Times would like to hear from readers who may have encountered fake reviews online, especially if they resulted in a purchase that failed to live up to expectations.
