Have You Been Approached by Real Estate Buyers in Lahaina? Tell Us.

As people in Hawaii recover from the wildfires that tore through parts of Maui and devastated the seaside town of Lahaina, some have raised concerns that real estate speculators would swoop in and take advantage of the disaster to snap up property. Restoring a community after a wildfire can be an expensive and daunting process, and speculators may see it as an opportunity to buy distressed property cheaply and build on it, or flip it later for a profit.

Gov. Josh Green of Hawaii said that he was exploring the idea of a moratorium on any sales of real property that was damaged or destroyed by the fires. “You would be pretty poorly informed if you try to steal land from our people and then build here,” he warned.

The Times is seeking Lahaina residents who have been approached by speculators wanting to buy land there. We’re hoping to better understand the struggle of rebuilding after a crisis, and what role speculators play in that process.

If you or someone you know has been approached, please share your story in the form below.
