Live Vote Count: Tracking the House Speaker Vote

The House is expected to vote after noon Eastern time. A majority of Republicans supported Jim Jordan in a private vote last week, but it is not clear if he has the votes to win a floor vote.

The House of Representatives plans to vote to elect a new speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was removed two weeks ago.

Note: To win, a member must receive a majority of votes cast for a person, not counting “present” votes. The Constitution specifies that House members choose the speaker, but the speaker does not have to be a current or even a former representative.

House Republicans nominated Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio in a closed-door vote last week, although it remains unclear if he has enough support to win on the House floor. Mr. Jordan will need the votes of all but four of his Republican colleagues to become speaker if every House member casts a vote.

Last Wednesday, Republicans nominated Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana as their candidate, but Mr. Scalise withdrew his bid after it became clear that he did not have the votes to win.

The vote for a new speaker comes on the heels of the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, which took place days after he struck a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown. Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida introduced the motion to remove Mr. McCarthy, and along with seven other far-right Republicans and all the House Democrats, he succeeded.

Mr. McCarthy won the speakership in January after a marathon 15 rounds of voting. Below, we will keep track of how every representative votes.
