Marine Killed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina

A U.S. Marine at a military base in North Carolina was being held Wednesday night on suspicion of being involved in the killing of another Marine earlier that day, according to the base.

The base, Camp Lejeune, said in a statement that law enforcement there apprehended the Marine at about 10:15 p.m., calling the death a homicide. The killing happened in a barracks room earlier that evening, the statement said, but the base did not provide additional details.

The base, spread across 156,000 acres and 11 miles of beach, is used for training troops on the coast of North Carolina, northeast of Wilmington. The base and the surrounding community are home to about 170,000 residents, including active duty Marines, retirees and civilian employees, according to the base’s website.

An annual training exercise had been scheduled to begin on Friday, an earlier release said, to practice emergency responses and other security procedures.
