Gov. Tim Walz mixed up Iran and Israel, and said he became “friends with school shooters,” when talking about empathizing with Sandy Hook parents.

Moderator: “Governor Walz, if you were the final voice in the situation room would you support or oppose a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran?” “Iran — or I — Israel’s ability to be able to defend itself is absolutely fundamental. The expansion of Israel and its proxies is an absolute fundamental necessity for the United States to have the steady leadership there. Yeah, I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents. I’ve become friends with school shooters. I’ve seen it. Look, the N.R.A., I was the N.R.A. guy for a long time. They used to teach gun safety. Well, I’ve enjoyed tonight’s debate and I think there was a lot of commonality here. And I’m sympathetic to misspeaking on things. And I think I might have with the Senator —” “Me too, man.”
