Navy Plane Misses Hawaii Runway With 9 Aboard

A United States Navy maritime patrol aircraft overshot a runway after landing at a Marine Corps base in Hawaii on Monday and ended up in nearby waters, the Marine Corps said. The nine crew members on board all escaped uninjured.

The accident, near Marine Corps Base Hawaii, near Kaneohe Bay, occurred early Monday afternoon, said Lt. Hailey Harms, the base’s deputy director of public affairs. She said the plane, a P-8A Poseidon, had been flying a routine training mission.

All nine Navy personnel on board escaped from the aircraft and were later rescued from an inflatable life raft floating in the water, Lieutenant Harms said.

The plane was still in the water as of late Monday afternoon, she said. No other details were immediately available.

The P-8A Poseidon is about 130 feet long and 42 feet wide, according to the Navy. It carries a crew of nine and is mainly used for surveillance missions.
